Rudders

At Damen Marine Components, we design rudder systems that seamlessly align with our customers’ needs. For medium to high-speed vessels, such as container ships and frigates, our full spade rudder systems with Atlantic profile are the industry standard. On the other hand, Master profile rudders are ideal for dredging and fishing vessels to enable high maneuverability. Flap rudder types, e.g. ‘Timon’ and ‘Barke’, provide the best performance for both maneuvering and course stability.

Barke® Flap Rudder

The Barke® flap rudder is the solution for any vessel requiring high maneuverability combined with proven fuel savings.
With its progressively rotating flap, the Barke® rudder generates high lift forces at large rudder angles and low drag (resistance) at small rudder angles.
The enclosed linkage system of the Barke® rudder provides overload protection and eliminates the entry risk of sand, ice and floating objects. These are ideal characteristics for fishing and research vessels, and dredgers.

-    Best suited for seagoing vessels in the medium-speed range
-    45º rudder angle + 55º flap angle = total 100º angle
-    Long lifespan

Timon Flap Rudder

The Timon rudder is known for its excellent maneuvering and course-keeping performance. This rudder has an open flap linkage mechanism and side bar flap system with a 90 degree angle. It is available in a wide range of sizes, making it the ideal rudder for larger vessels such as offshore and container vessels. To improve the water flow from the propeller you can also add a rudder bulb, a bulb cam lead to fuel savings of up to 1.5%.

-    Best suited for seagoing vessels in the medium to high speed range
-    45º rudder angle + 45º flap angle = total 90º angle
-    Long lifespan

Master Fishtail Rudder

The Master rudder has a specially designed fishtail profile. This rudder is a great option for vessels operating in shallow waters. With rudder angles up to 65º, it allows for a high lift. The design of this fishtail rudder can be optimized to suit a wide range of vessels.

The Master rudder offers very good maneuvering performance. This rudder is often combined with a rudder bulb.

-    Best suited to vessels of all sizes that travel short distances and require high maneuverability
-    High lift
-    Reliable robust design

Shock Proof Rudder with ART™

The Shock Proof rudder is specially designed for naval vessels. These ships need to be equipped with rudders designed to withstand extreme shocks and improve the vessels’ hydrodynamic properties and to lower the signature of a vessel.

When you add Asymmetric Rudder Technology (ART™) to the Shock Proof rudder you reduce resistance and cavitation. ART™ is available in two versions: the S- and Z-shape. The unique leading edge that is adapted to match the angles of the propeller ensures a smooth water flow.

-    Best suited for naval vessels with high propeller load (over 20 knots)
-    Shock proof during extreme circumstances
-    Increased operational profile

Steering systems

No matter what ship type, we can provide standardized solutions up to 1,600 kNm torque.
For heavier systems, DMC teams up with eminent partners to fulfil customer requirements. Our range includes Piston type steering systems, also known as RAM type steering systems and the compact Rotary Vane concept. All are developed and produced in-house in our production facility in the Netherlands.

Piston-type Steering System

With its in-house cylinder design, the Piston-type steering system guarantees reliability and high quality. The Piston-type steering system is available in standardized series with different configurations but can also be custom-built according to specific requirements. The torque range varies from 1 up to 425 kNm with rudder angles up to 65 degrees.

-    For all vessels with a required rudder torque up to 425kNm
-    Compact & efficient design
-    Custom-built option

Rotary Vane Steering System

The Rotary Vane steering system is ideal for all sea-going vessels as well as superyachts and naval vessels. The high-end design consists of an integrated tiller and cylinder which generates the same high torque at all possible steering angles. It is safe to operate as it has only one rotating part, and also requires relatively low maintenance.

-    For all vessels with a torque range from 45 up to 1600 kNm
-    Equally high torque at all steering angles up to 65 degrees
-    No on-site alignment required

Deck equipment

Durable, reliable and low maintenance. That is what owners and captains expect of their deck machinery. Even in the most extreme weather or working conditions, winches and capstans must be relied upon to keep doing their job. All our deck machinery is developed in-house, based on our decades-long experience and our knowledge of (inland) shipping and towage. This solid base of knowledge and experience comes directly from practice, feedback from our loyal customers and from our parent company Damen Shipyards. This know-how also enables us to work under the usual ISO standards throughout the production process. Because we build our range of deck equipment with standardized components, our customers benefit from optimal availability, scalability and flexibility. In addition, customization is of course always possible.

Deck equipment that performs even under the toughest conditions

Tugger Winch

A tugger winch is made to perform frequent assistance work on any type of vessel. Tugger winches can be used for multifunctional work on tugboats and other work boats and are used for a wide range of tasks. A DMC tugger winch excels in its simplicity. Despite their simple, robust design and heavy-duty construction, DMC tugger winches function as reliable winches. The performance of our tugger winches is assured because we select only the highest quality gearboxes. DMC tugger winches set themselves apart by their low-maintenance design and long service life.

Anchor and Mooring Winch

Our range of anchor and mooring winches is designed for intensive use. For example, when waiting offshore in stormy weather for the next tow. Where regular anchor winches can only handle short-term peak loads, DMC anchors and mooring winches have the ability to actually pull and hold the forces at the nominal motor torque. Multiple configurations are possible as we build our winches with standardized modular solutions. In addition, customization is always an option.

Towing pin

Towing pins are used on tugs and work boats. They primarily serve to guide towing ropes and anchor chains. When an anchor has to be hauled in or when there is a tow behind or in front of the vessel, the towing pins are used to secure the towing rope or anchor chain. This is then always guided straight backwards or forwards and can thus not move uncontrollably across the deck, which helps to minimize any danger to the crew. During normal navigation, when not in use, the towing pins are flush with the deck.

The towing pins can be fitted with a chain stopper. This allows the anchor chain to be fixed and to release the working line of the anchor chain with the buoy.

-    Pin configuration: Two, three or four-pin
-    Optionally fitted with flippers
-    Available with 1 or 2 chain stoppers
